MISSION LOG 00.2 "First Inspection - Part 2"

Klemendat stepped out of the turbolift and turned right towards the storage area that would soon hold the weapons lockers, exterior utility suits, and emergency hull repair equipment. Careful planning meant consideration of all possible...

What was that? A noise from Engineering? There aren't supposed to be any workers on board at this hour, he thought.

Klemendat turned back and headed to the Main Engine Room.
There he spotted a solitary figure standing over a lighted
diagram table: a stocky, blond-haired human male. Probably
from one of Earth's northern European races; technologically
adept, but politically and strategically naive.

"You!" exclaimed Klemendat, "Name, rank and ID number. Do you have clearance for this area?"

The stocky officer barely looked up from his diagram and smiled with an upraised eyebrow. "Captain Jeff Handshaw, sir, I'm sure you know of me..."

Klemendat sighed inwardly not wishing to reveal any sign of weakness or lack of intuition "I'm relieved to know you're not a saboteur." He stood upright and pushing his shoulders back he put on a very matter-of-fact expression, "You're not due to report in until 0800, day after tomorrow."

Captain Handshaw returned to his diagram as he spoke, "My ship," a mental beat, "caught a tail wind, and I got here a little early..." More than five days early...I hope he doesn't put two and two together, since I couldn't possibly get from where I was to here before then, using normal technological means.

Klemendat studied the look on Handshaw's face. He would have to be extra careful with this one, he thought. Chief Engineers tend to be very protective of "their" ships. "In that case, Mr. Handshaw, welcome aboard the StarQuest. I look forward to discussing security protocols with you at our first  general staff meeting." Klemendat turned and walked out of the Main Engine Room.

Captain Handshaw waited until Klemendat had left the engine room before looking up again.  His gaze was long and calculating as he watched the doorway that the First Officer had excited out of...

That was my first meeting with our new Number One, I'm sort of glad that there's someone else on the ship, it gets pretty lonely around here, but as I noted earlier, I better keep my eye on him and my secrets.
